Island Guide
How Savary
Works
Savary is unorganized territory, so it has no municipal council of its own. Instead a patchwork of provincial, regional and community bodies looks after roads, fire protection, water and land. Here is who does what.
Governance
Who looks after what
Roads (the Province)
As unorganized territory, Savary falls under the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Road maintenance is handled by private contractor Capilano Highways.
qathet Regional District
Savary, with Lund, forms Area A of the qRD. The dock, barge landing, parking lot and Indian Point boat launch are qRD assets. Jason Lennox is the Area A representative.
Fire protection
The Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department runs three fire halls as a semi-autonomous branch of the qRD.
Community bodies
The Savary Island Committee advises government, Savary Shores elects water trustees, and the Savary Island Land Trust and Nature Trust of BC protect land.
