From subdivision to sanctuary
The Trillium years
From the early 1990s, US-based Trillium Corporation owned the land and floated various plans to subdivide it.
The Nature Trust steps in
The Nature Trust of BC took a 50% interest around 2000 and became sole owner in 2019.
Saved in 2018
On May 31, 2018 the purchase of District Lot 1375 closed. More than 175 donors from every corner of the island raised four million dollars.
What it protects
About 350 acres across the widest part of Savary, from First and Second Points on the north side to Beacon Point and Duck Bay on the south.
Broom bashers welcome
Volunteers help the Nature Trust clear invasive Scotch broom, originally planted for erosion control and now a fire hazard. These are no-hunting lands, cared for by a local steward.
